Countertop Ice Makers: How They Work and How to Get the Most From One

If you are always running out of ice, or your freezer's ice tray never keeps up with summer drinks, a countertop ice maker can be a useful addition to the kitchen. These compact machines plug into a regular outlet, need no water line and start producing ice within minutes. But they work differently from a freezer, and knowing how they work helps you get the most from one. This guide covers how countertop ice makers work, what to look for, how to use and clean one, and what they cannot do.

How a countertop ice maker works

You pour water into a small reservoir. A pump sends water to a tray, where cold metal prongs freeze it into cubes in a few minutes. When the cubes are ready, the prongs warm slightly so the ice drops into a basket, and the cycle starts again. Melted ice drains back into the reservoir and is reused.

Most portable models make "bullet" cubes, which are hollow on one side and freeze quickly. They are great for drinks and cool down fast.

Important: it is not a freezer

A countertop ice maker makes ice, but it does not keep it frozen. The basket is insulated, so the ice stays cold for a while, but it slowly melts back into the reservoir, where it becomes the water for the next batch. For long-term storage, move the ice into a freezer bag or container in your freezer.

What to look for

Ice per day

Daily output is usually given in pounds per 24 hours. Around 20–26 lb per day suits most households and casual entertaining.

Cycle time

This is how quickly the first batch arrives. Faster cycles are useful when guests arrive unexpectedly.

Water tank size

A larger tank means fewer refills, but it also makes the machine bigger.

Cube size

Some machines let you choose small or large cubes.

Self-cleaning

A self-cleaning cycle makes regular maintenance easier.

Footprint

Measure your counter space, including a little room around the machine for air flow.

An example

The Countertop Ice Maker we carry makes six bullet cubes about nine minutes after you fill the tank and up to 24 lb of ice in 24 hours. It has a 1.5 L water tank, two cube sizes, a self-cleaning mode and a window on the lid so you can watch the ice form. It measures about 8.8 × 12.5 × 11.6 inches and comes in green.

Getting started

  1. Unpack and let it stand upright for a while before first use. Many manufacturers recommend this after shipping so the cooling system can settle; follow the time given in your manual.
  2. Clean it before the first batch following the manual, and discard the first few batches of ice.
  3. Place it on a flat, stable surface with space around the vents.
  4. Fill the reservoir with clean drinking water up to the marked line.
  5. Switch it on and choose the cube size.

Tips for better ice

  • Use plain water only. Juice, soda, coffee or other drinks can clog the pump and damage the machine.
  • Use cold water for faster first batches.
  • Filtered water can reduce cloudiness and mineral build-up.
  • Empty the basket regularly into a freezer container if you want to store ice.
  • Keep it out of direct sun and away from the oven or dishwasher vents.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Empty and dry the reservoir if you will not use the machine for a few days.
  • Run the self-cleaning cycle regularly, following the manual.
  • Wipe the basket, scoop and exterior with a soft cloth and mild soap.
  • If your water is hard, descale periodically using the method recommended in the manual.

Is a countertop ice maker worth it?

It is a good fit if you entertain often, live somewhere hot, drink a lot of iced drinks, or have a freezer without a built-in ice maker. It is less useful if you only need a few cubes a week, or if counter space is very tight.

Quick recap

Countertop ice makers produce fresh ice in minutes without a water line, but they do not keep ice frozen, so move extra ice to the freezer. Check daily output, cycle time, tank size and self-cleaning, use plain water only, and clean the machine regularly.

Our Countertop Ice Maker makes up to 24 lb of ice a day with a self-cleaning mode. Orders ship free within the US; delivery times are on our shipping policy page.
